NTU BRIDGE DESIGN COMPETITION 2015

Interview

We interview one of our student who attended the NTU BRIDGE DESIGN COMPETITION 2015

Coming from a Diploma called "Diploma in Engineering with Business". A bridge design competition would be the very last thing you would last expect to find us.
Our initial thought when we first signup for the competition was that we were TOTALLY out of out elements or comfort zone.
Firstly the competition was meant for universities but this year was the first year they welcomed polytechnics .A week before the competition all of us were strching our head on how to design the bridges. In total we had 7 teams representing NYP .Half of which were year 3 engineering students.Only a handful of us was from DEB.Our teacher in charge was Mr Leong a very funny yet very knowledgeable Senior Lecturer in NYP.My fellow team mate (since we worked in pairs) was Luke a Year 3 student in EEE. Despite our age gap we managed to understand and complete each other concepts and ides.

On the day of judging to our surprise our bridges were as competitive as those from the universities and other polytechnics. As we placed more and more weight on our structures and the atmosphere tensed up as the crowd quietens. And in a split second our bridge broke. Satisfied with the weight at which the bridge could withstood ,we waited patiently for the results. After all the excitement ,one of the team from NYP manage to got into the top 10 positions. We may not have won the top 3 but the exprience for us Year 1 DEB students at the same time learning the concepts of how bridges work further intrigue us in engineering !
It would be a understatement to say that we had a awesome time together !! ^^

The day after our competition ,all of us received a text from Mr Leong ,he confessed that yesterday was actually his 50th Birthday, and the rest of what he texted in the pic below ! :)

Interview : " How do you feel about attending DEB as OGL in 2015?"

Being a person who barely comes out of my comfort zone being an ogl was a great experience for me. Considering the fact that it was my first time i had a pretty great class (EB1505). The main point of the orientation camp is for the freshies to have fun and start bonding between their classmates. So , despite the limits that we have , my group  of friends and i were able to try our best for the freshies to have fun during the camp. We even had the freshies bring extra shirt cos we wanted to play our own games. All in all  i definitely wouldn't be able to be a proper ogl without the help of my friends  from the deb and a great class i was facilitating.

A day in my life as a DEB student by Nurul Afiqah :)

Hello there! My name is Nurul Afiqah, I am studying Engineering with

Business under School of Engineering in Nanyang Polytechnic. As a

DEB student, it is not all fun and game neither is it all academics. But

we, engine students would always find a way to have fun ;) As there

is quite a big number of students in DEB and we are the pioneers in

for this course in NYP, we are divided into 4 groups, V1-V4. So every

semester, V1 & V2 would learn a different module than V3 & V4. So

far the modules that I’m taking are quite manageable. It would be quite

hard at the start, but make sure to never suffer in silence, when in doubt

always ask! The lecturers may seem very scary but is swear they are

very helpful. If you’re too scared or shy to as the lecturers, why not start

off with your classmates? Having a study group might seem impossible

as you’d always be chatting away but if the tests are nearing, pretty sure

everybody would be mugging away. Enough tips and more on the real

deal which is a day in my life as a DEB student!! There are long days

and there are short day.

So on Thursday I would usually wake up at 8,check my social websites

for example Instagram, twitter and at times YouTube if I have the time.

Then, I’d finally have the energy to get out of bed and wash up and get

ready for school!! Sometimes its hard to choose what to wear for school

but I’ve learnt to dress comfortably and not to attract other’s because

everybody is looking good, you don’t even have to try. Anyway because

today I have cca, I have just chosen to wear a simple plain tee, jeans

and my vans. Since I live at the West side of Pasir Ris, I have to leave

house before 9 so that I can reach school before 10. I take 2 buses to

school, 109 & 72. During the bus ride I usually just listen to songs on my

phone and catch up with some social websites again or have a chat with

my friends on WhatsApp. Usually before class start I would either have

a light breakfast at home or buy MacDonald’s at school since it’s

cheaper :D First class of the day, Mathematic 1A. Today is a tutorial,

which mean I would get to try out questions or ask the lecturer questions

that I have on the topic. So far he’s been really helpful and kind to

repeat things if one of us doesn’t understand. Our lessons are from

1010-1200. After class is LUNCH!! My friends would decide to eat either

at Koufu or South Canteen as we only have an hour of break. Either

canteen, at this timing the cafeteria would be packed with people. So I’d

usually buy some snacks to last me till the end of next lesson. Next

class is Engineering Economics. It is a very dreadful yet interesting

class as we get to learn a little bit about Business and how market

works. Not the market which our mothers go to but the financial market,

hehe. Today is tutorial, so usually our lecturer would go through the

tutorial given and answer questions that we have. To me tutorials are

better than lectures as I would somehow know what kind of questions

they would be asking and what I’d have to know. Class ends at 1450, if I

did not sign up for Foreign Bodies(dance club), I could have gone home

and rest but since I did sign up and made through the auditions, I have

CCA. No complaints though as I LOVE DANCE. Since lessons are done

for the day, I would usually go grab a proper meal after class before

CCA starts and I would meet up with the rest of my dance mates and

hang around at the ‘Mirror’. It’s a given space in campus for people to

dance, we’re quite fortunate and lucky to be given a space in campus to

practise our dance moves. Or, if I had assignments or tests to study for I

would make my way to the library and study either alone or with my

study buddy. My CCA starts at 1800 and ends at 2230. During dance

practise, we start of by stretching a lot so that we wouldn’t get cramps or

aches the next morning but the pain is unavoidable. After stretching, we

would start grooving, doing basic dance moves like bounce, rotations

and other grooves. In the last few hours we would learn choreography

taught by the seniors. AND PRAC ENDS): But Im happy to go home

though after a long day. In the bus, I would snore away, embarrassing

but yes when I get too tired, I would snore sometimes. Finally I reach

home and showered ready for bed. Feeling glad that I had free time

before CCA to study and do my assignments hence I could sleep and

not burn the night away and losing my sleep which is important as we

have to stay awake and pay attention in class. That’s it about a day in

my life as an DEB student, I hope you got the jist of it. Till next time !!

Feedback from DEB students

What do you like about DEB?

"What I like about Engineering with Business is that it not only allows us to make our prototypes but also allows us to venture into the business prospect. I think this would be of great help in future, especially since the business segment requires people. By making sure we develop good work skills in future, we have a lot of group work and assignments that builds us in having leadership skills and great teamwork - all of which will be beneficial when we find jobs."

- By Denise DEB1401

"One thing I like about deb is we have different modules from both engineering and business which other course doesn’t have."

-  By WangChen DEB1401

"DEB is great. Usually a course would only focus on one specific type. DEB stands for engineering with business. Though most of the contents are about engineering, we did learn about business as well. We learn how to promote the products we have created. Moreover, at the end of year2, we are allowed to choose between business and engineering to further our studies.  "

- By Adibah DEB1401

"I like engineering with business, in short DEB, because I feel that it benefits me as I get to study both engineering and business modules which other engineering course does not offer so I believed that this will allow me to learn more skills that will benefits me in the future. Also, there will be lots of Math in engineering with business and Math is my favorite subject in secondary school. Lastly, DEB also allows me to choose if I want to specialize in business servitization or product engineering in my 3rd year."

-By Sophie Ying 1401

"The lecturers in DEB are very passionate in teaching us and I met lots of great friends in DEB."
